The global environmental community is moving towards eliminating lead and certain other hazardous substances
from all products where possible, including lead used in electronics, such as PCB boards.
The European Union (EU) has implemented a Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and prohibited the use of
lead and 5 other substances in electronics beginning July 1, 2006. The current draft of the definition of "lead
free" by RoHS Indicates a maximum concentration value of 0.1% by weight in homogenous material. This limit also
applies to: mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyls (PBDE).
In addition a permitted value of 0.01% applies to homogenous cadmium. Homogenous meaning "of uniform composition
throughout". A semi-conductor package contains many homogenous materials including: plastic moulding material,
tin electroplating coating on the lead frame, the lead frame alloys, and gold bond wires.
British Encoder Products Company complies with all of the requirements of the RoHS directive and will implement
future changes as required.

The WEEE directive is intended to prevent waste consisting of electrical and electronic equipment from being introduced to the waste stream. If a device is covered under the directive, it places the responsibility for disposal, and or recycling of WEEE on its producer.
Products produced by British Encoder Product Company are not covered in the scope of the WEEE Directive because they do not fall within any of the defined product categories. Our products are always part of a larger system or piece of equipment, and therefore are not "stand-alone" equipment as defined by the Technical Adaptation Committee (TAC).
Any customers who wish to send us British Encoder Product Company produced items, we are willing to recycle and dispose of them in a manner that meets all local environmental regulations.
The main aim of REACH, as it applies to British Encoder Products Company products, is to ensure a high level of protection to human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals.
Encoder Products Company does not manufacture or distribute any product that intentionally release chemicals, or any substances of concern, as detailed in the REACH Directive. Our products, therefore, are not affected by the REACH Directive and do not require registration.

Conflict minerals are minerals mined under conditions of armed conflict and human rights abuses, notably in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, by the Congolese National Army and various armed rebel groups, including the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda.
The most commonly mined minerals are cassiterite (for Tin), wolframite (for Tungsten), coltan (for Tantalum), and gold, which are extracted from the Eastern Congo, and passed through a variety of intermediaries before being purchased by multinational electronics companies. Our Corporate aim is not to use products so produced wherever possible.

Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS)
The ozone layer acts like a shield in the upper atmosphere to protect the earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. Certain man-made chemicals used in refrigeration, air conditioning, fire and explosion prevention systems, and as solvents can trigger reactions in the atmosphere that destroy the ozone layer.
These chemicals are termed ozone-depleting substances and include:
Halons – chlorofluorocarbons that contain bromine
The depletion of the ozone layer can threaten human health and damage plant life and ocean ecosystems. In 1987, world leaders signed the initial Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. It has since been ratified by nearly 200 countries, who have committed to meeting strict time-bound reduction obligations for each of the nearly 100 substances controlled by the protocol. Scientific assessments now predict a healing of the ozone layer later this century.
